This trip follows the Rose Hills No 3 Fire Road up to a now-defunct and rusty water tank which sits at a fork in the road mid-canyon. The gentle uphill fire road parallels the creekbed, which in turn parallels Turnbull Canyon Road, but the dense creekside foliage and treecover just south of the trail makes it feel sufficiently isolated and natural. As the road itself tends to be hot and dusty (with the exception of a few stands of trees in the last third of the trail there's no shade), the best times to make the trip are early in the morning and later in the afternoon. Even when growth begins to encroach, the road is very wide, and this fact in conjuction with the road's "flatness" make this a relatively safe and easy trip. It is therefore ideal for kids and/or wilderness enthusiasts just starting out, on bikes or on foot. From the lower Turnbull Canyon trailhead gate, simply follow the fire road east for 0.75 miles to the water tank, then return the way you came. Contributed by Greg Garabedian.
